While shaman’s may not have factored in medical prescriptions while they prepare to consume ayahuasca, in the western world we must.

There comes a point where you have to leave the traditional realm and address the possible risks associated with combining ayahuasca and natural supplements like kratom or other pharmaceutical medications.

There are no prescription medications in the Amazon hundreds of years ago. Now we know that mixing plant-based supplements like kratom or medications with ayahuasca can be dangerous- and possibly lethal.

What Is Kratom?

Mitragyna speciosa (kratom) is a tree that grows in the tropics of Southeast Asia and is native to Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The leaves of kratom are chewed raw, or they are dried and smoked, put into capsules, or boiling a tea.

In Small doses, kratom can stimulate desirable effects that can help treat pain, prevent withdrawal symptoms from opiates, and can be a mild stimulant.

In larger doses, you may feel euphoric effects, increase in stamina, and an increase in energy.

What Is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is a sacred medicinal plant located in the South American Amazon. Two plants are used to make ancient ayahuasca tea.

While each indigenous group from the Amazon had their on a variation of the concoction, it is commonly made with a vine called Banisteriopsis caapi, and leaves from a bush called Psychotria.

After boiling the plants for several hours, the liquid is reduced, and ready for an ayahuasca ceremony. The effects of ayahuasca are intense, and some say profound as this plant will heal you by changing the way you view life.

It can help heal you on all levels- mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Everyone will have their own experience with ayahuasca because everybody experiences this plant in their special way.

What Are The Risks Of Mixing Ayahuasca And Kratom?

While deaths associated with ayahuasca are rare, there are risks involved. You want to prepare your body and mind for an ayahuasca ceremony as best as you can.

You should begin purifying your body of certain foods and drugs around 6 weeks before consuming ayahuasca.

At least two weeks ago from the ceremony it is best to abstain from substances like kratom, soy, salt, alcohol, cannabis, and recreational drugs.

The Effects Of Drug Interactions

There is little information on the long-term use of plant-based medicines like ayahuasca and kratom and the combination of pharmaceutical medications.

I do not recommend mixing kratom with any supplement natural or synthetic. There are far too many risks to consider that there is solid science-backed evidence proving that mixing ayahuasca and kratom is safe.

A reasonable theory is that both ayahuasca and kratom work on the same 5-HT2A receptor, but kratom acts as an agonist.

If this neurochemical interaction does indeed take place, then it is quite possible that using kratom during an ayahuasca experience may inhibit the potential of feeling the full effects.

It is best to purify your body for any traditional plant medicine ceremony, so it is best to refrain from using kratom at least two weeks before you use ayahuasca.

What Will Happen If I Use Ayahuasca And Kratom?

Unfortunately, not much. Not only are you putting yourself at risk to develop toxic levels of serotonin in your body to the point of death, ayahuasca and kratom work on the same receptors, but in different ways.

Kratom actually blocks signals from these receptors the same time ayahuasca is trying to act on them. What does this mean? Let me spell it out for you: you won’t feel a thing.

There is a highly probable chance you will not feel the effects of ayahuasca at all if you have kratom or other pharmaceutical medications in your system.

So, What Do Users Who Mix Kratom And Ayahuasca Think?

From what I can tell, people who use kratom and partake in an aya ceremony say:

Kratom puts a damper on the effects of ayahuasca. In fact, you may not feel any effects of ayahuasca at all if there is kratom or other supplements/ medications in your system.

Some users say the intoxicating effects of ayahuasca include: tactile, visual, and auditory hallucinations combined with intense emotional experiences considered a spiritual awakening.

Others say you may expose yourself to an altered state of consciousness and feel an interconnectedness with other living beings like animals and nature.

There are people who mix the two that say that we don’t have enough information on either kratom or ayahuasca to confidently say mixing the two supplements is safe.

We’ve got a very unclear picture of what alkaloids in kratom do and how they interact with other plant-based medicines and pharmaceuticals.

What do I think? I am of the opinion that if you are doing a ceremony, take a break from kratom.
